In partnership with The TENG Company, the Chinese Music Instrumental Grading Examinations 2017​ are​ now open for registration!

The main objectives of the Examinations are:

1. To set up an examination system that will be recognised and accepted by academic and fine arts institutions in Singapore and abroad.

2. To establish a coherent and consistent set of guidelines for facilitating systematic training of various Chinese musical instruments.

3. To promote appreciation and education of Chinese music in Singapore and the region.

The Examinations' syllabus includes these 16 instruments in the Chinese orchestra: Guzheng, Erh​u, Dizi, Yangqin, Pipa, Ruan, Liuqin, Gaoyin Sheng, Zhongyin Sheng, Gaoyin Suona, Zhongyin Suona, Hulusi, Guan, Cello, Double Bass and Percussion.

The Examinations are divided into 8 grading levels (Grade 1 to Grade 8) and an Advanced Performance level. They are open to all members of the public. Overseas candidates are also welcome to register!​

1) Examination Structure

​​Basic Level (Grade 1 to 3)​

​Intermediate Level (Grade 4 to 6)
  • ​One set study piece incorporating scales​
  • Two solo music pieces, to be selected from a list of four​
​Advanced Level (Grade 7 and 8)
  • ​One set study piece incorporating scales
  • Two solo music pieces, to be selected from a list of four​
​Certificate in Professional Performance
  • ​​Three music pieces

​2) Requirements for Examination for Certificate in Professional Performance 

Candidate should hold Grade 8 or equivalent qualifications from any examination board and submit the registration form together with either:
a. Attached qualifications certified by any examination board, OR
b. A video recording of one performance piece.

The Examination board will not provide examination scores for the Examination for Certificate in Professional Performance. Students are to use their own books and exam scores with reference to the versions and composers stated.

4) Registration & Payment 

Registration is open from 17 July 2017 and closes on 29 September 2017. Registrations can be submitted via:​

1. Online – Candidates can now register online at and make credit/debit card payments to complete the registration.

2. By Post – Only crossed cheques and bank drafts allowed.

5) Examination Fee

The registration form will only be processed upon full payment of the Examination fees. Registration made before 8 September 2017 are entitled to early-bird special rates. Details of Examination fees payable are as follows:

6) Withdrawal from Examinations

Request to withdraw from the Examinations must be emailed to 

80% of the Examination fee will be refunded for withdrawal submitted before registration deadline, 29 September 2017. 20% of the Examination fee will be refunded for withdrawals submitted thereafter but before 10 November 2017. There are no refunds for absentees or withdrawals submitted after 10 November 2017.

7) Registration for Schools

Schools are able to register their students for the Examinations and make payment for the Examination fee through Edusave. Payment through Edusave can only be processed for mass registration (more than 20 students) Submitted by schools. For enquiries, please call 9648 8771 or email

8) Examiners

The panel of invited examiners are Mr Wang Shuren (Erhu), Ms Chong Jing (Guzheng), Mr Li Zhen (Dizi, Sheng, Suona, Guan & Hulusi), Mr Ding Guoshun (Yangqin & Percussion), Mr Fang Jinlong (Pipa, Ruan,Liuqin) and Mr Gao Huanzhi (Cello & Double Bass).

9) Examination Venues

The Examinations will be conducted at the following venues: Confucius Institute (27 Nov – 7 Dec 2017), Elias Park Primary School (28 Nov 2017), Yu Neng Primary School (29 Nov 2017), Sheng Hong Arts Institute (30 Nov 2017), and Zheng Professionals (2 Dec 2017).
The dates and venue for the Percussion Examination will be announced at a later date.​

10) Examination Scores

Examination Scores can be purchased online (, from Confucius Institute and major Chinese musical instrument retailers in Singapore. The Examination scores are priced from $22.00 to $35.00.
