Basic Dizi (Chinese Flute) Course

The dizi may look like a simple instrument but a lot of skills and techniques are involved to create pleasing music. In this comprehensive series of lessons, you will learn how to care for your dizi, holding techniques, note reading, diaphragmatic breathing, fingering, slurring/tonguing articulations and more! The Instructor Mr Chye Yong Seng has many years of teaching and performing experience, ensuring that you will get the most out of your lessons.

Topics Covered:

  • Pasting dimo(笛膜) and play exercises with the first three notes in D major
  • Diaphragmatic breathing with long note exercises
  • Simple musical note-reading with higher notes played
  • Tonguing and slurring with simple melodies played
  • Octave playing with harmonics
  • Music appreciation with well-known dizi solos
  • Simple ornaments like mordants and trills
  • Intro to pieces for grade one dizi exam for basic course 2

  • BA (Hons) in Music
  • Former part-time lecturer at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts for World Music and Concert Management modules.
  • 1st prize winner for Chinese Flute solo open section, 1st National Music Competition.
